The genesis of JC Beal Construction LLC was a firm founded by Eugene Kurtz in 1962. Jim Beal, one of the original employees, positioned himself to take over the company in 1978. The firm quickly became known for quality products, reasonable costs, reliable scheduling, and exceptional in-house tradespeople.
Fred J. Beal, current president, began his career with his father as a carpenter in 1980. His brother George joined in 1987 with a degree in building construction and extensive large-project experience. Together, they've grown JC Beal into a comprehensive construction firm capable of managing the most complex projects while maintaining the business principles established decades ago.

Fred J. Beal
President
Fred J. Beal brings more than 35 years of construction industry experience to the firm. After starting as a tradesman with JC Beal Construction and other local firms, he rose through positions of increasing responsibility before becoming President in 1987. Under his leadership, the company grew from a strictly local business with $2 million in sales to a full-service general contracting, construction management, and design-build firm serving commercial, institutional, and infrastructure clients across the region from offices in Detroit and Ypsilanti.
The firm has earned regional recognition for its expertise in downtown construction, including renovation and historic restoration, new infill projects, and tenant build-outs, along with extensive pre-development support. Signature projects include the $33 million renovation of Detroit's 34-story Broderick Tower, the Kingsley Condominiums in Ann Arbor, the Collegian on Maynard, and the Fifth Avenue Building. The firm's restoration portfolio spans landmark properties in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Royal Oak, as well as major commercial renovations including office space transformed into a high-tech environment for Google Inc.
Beyond building, Mr. Beal is a recognized civic leader and preservation advocate. He served a five-year term as President of the Washtenaw Contractors Association, chaired the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority Board, and was named 2004 Citizen of the Year by the Michigan Historic Preservation Network. He co-founded Beal Properties LLC in 2002, which today owns and manages 3,000 apartments and several hundred thousand square feet of commercial space. Mr. Beal holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from Michigan State University.

Construction Project Manager
Crystal O'Connor is a Construction Project Manager with over 8 years of hands-on experience leading complex restoration and redevelopment projects, complemented by 20 years of office management and controller expertise. She specializes in the rehabilitation of historic, vacant high-rise buildings, with a strong focus on preserving architectural integrity while meeting modern safety and compliance standards.
Ms. O'Connor is highly knowledgeable in city vacant-property regulations, permitting processes, and municipal compliance requirements, ensuring projects move efficiently from approval through completion. She brings a proven track record of coordinating with city officials, contractors, and stakeholders to navigate regulatory challenges and deliver successful restorations.
She combines financial oversight, operational leadership, and project execution in a detail-oriented approach that supports budget control, timeline management, and quality outcomes across all phases of construction.
Lauren N. Griffith
Estimator/Project Manager
Lauren N. Griffith is a results-driven construction professional with experience across all phases of the construction lifecycle, from lead generation and estimating to project oversight and closeout. She brings a well-rounded background with specialized experience in rehabilitated housing and commercial fencing projects.
As an Estimator/Project Manager for J.C. Beal, Ms. Griffith prepares detailed cost estimates, analyzes drawings and specifications, and manages projects from pre-construction through completion. She oversees subcontractor solicitation and buyout, contract administration, scheduling, and budgeting, and serves as a key point of contact for clients and stakeholders. Her earlier roles include Project Engineer, Asbestos Field Supervisor within a municipal demolition department, and Commercial Fence Estimator, where she generated over $5 million in sales through detailed bidding and strong client relationships.
Skilled in blueprint interpretation, material takeoffs, and managing RFIs, submittals, and bid documentation, Ms. Griffith collaborates effectively with project teams to deliver on time and within budget. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from Eastern Michigan University, along with specialized training in asbestos inspection and abatement oversight.

Alisa is a seasoned administrative professional with nearly 30 years of experience in office management. Oversees daily operations and ensures smooth coordination across all JC Beal offices.
Alan W. Tusek
Project Manager
Alan W. Tusek is an accomplished construction professional with more than 25 years of experience delivering residential, multifamily, institutional, and historic renovation projects throughout Michigan. His career spans field operations, project supervision, safety leadership, and full project management, bringing a hands-on, solutions-oriented approach to every assignment. He began as a union laborer with Demaria Building Company and advanced rapidly through roles including foreman, assistant superintendent, and on-site safety coordinator, completing all Supervisory Training Program (STP) courses through the Associated General Contractors.
As Project Superintendent with the Detroit Building Group / Colasanti joint venture, Mr. Tusek contributed to institutional projects including a new two-story elementary school in Detroit and led the rehabilitation of historic multifamily developments across the city's Palmer Park, New Center, and Jefferson-Chalmers districts. Since 2019, he has served in Project Manager roles overseeing large-scale residential and multifamily renovations, handling permitting, budgeting, scheduling, subcontractor procurement, site supervision, and safety and inspection compliance. He is widely respected for steady leadership, strong relationships with trades and inspectors, and a consistent record of delivering on time and within budget.
Mr. Tusek joined JC Beal Construction in 2025, taking on estimating and project management responsibilities for commercial renovation and build-out projects. He holds numerous safety and compliance credentials through the Detroit Training Center, including Lead Renovator certification, and brings extensive experience with Michigan building codes, safety programs, and regulatory compliance to complex projects in active urban environments.
